Albert Murray

Art is the life of human feeling. How it feels to be human, that’s what you get when you look at a painting or listen to music or look at a dance and so forth -- you get an emotional report, not a factual report. So it’s a connotation, not the denotation. As Hemingway taught us, you want enough denotation to suggest how it really is to be there. I’m interested in Americana. What is American and what is not? And what makes it American? What treatment transforms it into American?
